Keeping A Healthy Brain
By
Beverly Moore

Question: How do I keep my brain healthy?

Answer: There is a lot of attention being paid to Brain Health in research circles. Nutrition, it seems, plays an important part in keeping your brain healthy. Follow a heart healthy diet and you will keep your brain healthy too. Eat low salt, low sugar, and low fat foods. Eat fish; limit red meats. Keep your brain free of toxins: limit alcohol, stay away from toxic chemicals, and use biodegradable cleaners, for example.

Brain health is also determined by how active we keep our brain. There are activities one can do to stimulate the brain, thus making new brain cells. The brain never stops making brain cells: the more active our brain, the more cells are produced. Learn something new, unlike anything you’ve learned before. Try using your non-dominant hand to do tasks during the day.
Get away from the television. It is important to manage your stress as well. Exercise daily. Get a good night’s sleep. Surround yourself with positive people. Happiness raises endorphins in the brain, creating a feeling of well-being.

There are ‘cognitive educators’ available for those with early dementia to help maintain, perhaps even regain, language and memory. A trained coach comes to the home and works with the person for an hour or so a week through a workbook.

Next Month’s Question: How do I find a good nursing home when I cannot care for them at home?
