Question:
I’ve been told the medications for Alzheimer’s don’t slow
the progression of the disease. Is this so? Why take them?
Answer:
The medications, Aricept, Reminyl, Exelon and Namenda are
available for those folks with dementia. The first three
boost the availability of acetycholine which helps brain
cells ‘talk to each other.’ Namenda works in a different way
and when given in combination they enhance one another.
It is true, that Alzheimer’s disease is not slowed down by
these medications. The damage caused by protein deposits in
the brain is still increasing. Brain cells are dying. What
these medications seem to do is help the remaining healthy
cells function better. What does this mean for the person?
They continue to do things easier than if they were not
taking the medications. Some caregivers also note that their
family member feels better; is in a more positive mood. If
the medication is stopped, the person loses ground
functionally and may not regain function even if put back on
the medications.
The prevailing opinion seems to be, then, that staying on
the medications keeps the person ‘doing’ longer; staying
actively engaged in everyday activities and staying in
relationship with others. Skills are lost, yes. But there is
much more to life than being skilled. Being loved and part
of a family is far better. |
