Meaning & Purpose To
Each Day
By

Passion
is an important part of the human experience. Not only does
passion stimulate an inner center of energy but also,
passion gives meaning and purpose to each day. Many South
Shore Senior News readers are entering or are already
entrenched in the second-half of life.
Retirement is looming and sometimes health problems are emerging. In
response, many are beginning to think about a new or revised
sense of purpose and meaning. The question being faced is
how we are going to prepare for life changes? As 2012
begins, it’s time to plan a journey toward new opportunities
and pursue a passion for enjoyment. Finding passion can be
easier than one thinks. For most of us, sitting back and
identifying the pleasures we experienced throughout our
lives creates a foundation for the passions of choice today,
or tomorrow.
You might be surprised at where your thoughts take you as
you examine the movies you loved, the activities that gave
you happiness and the people who brought you joy. Ask
yourself about the aspects that provided sources of delight.
Ask yourself about the feelings you experienced when you
successfully completed a project that had meaning. Can a
version of these experiences be developed and fit into your
life today?
Passion is not only available for the healthy. Persons with
a dementia can take great pleasure in a range of pursuits.
Individuals can sit with a care person and in conversation,
explore the pleasures of their past.
Those with dementia are often able to participate in a wider
range of pursuits than are initially expected and these
pursuits would provide a purpose with passionate feelings of
existence.
Passion draws people to a shared interest whether it be
physical movement such as dance, sports, or exercise;
creative expression such as painting, music, writing or
telling stories or altruistic activities including
volunteering. Other interest may include gatherings for
games and intellectual choices on book clubs, lectures,
concerts and plays. Passion and participation enrich the
heart and the mind. Exploration and involvement enhance
brainpower and social engagement. Enjoy your passions and
have a happy and healthy 2012. |
