Patio Furniture And Barbecue Grills
By
Mary Beth Barry

Braintree - Spring is in the air! I feel this because the Red Sox are on their way to spring training, the days are staying brighter longer and the birds are singing every morning when I walk the dog.

I also know this because I was shopping the other day and saw patio furniture and barbecue grills on display. These are signs of warm spring and summer days to come. My thought was to gather other shoppers and sit down at the displays to pretend we were at a summer cookout. May be I could have fooled my brain into believing it was actually warm outside.

As we enter into February with its usual focus on heart health, there are so many opportunities to use our gifts to share with others and warm their hearts. I am a fan of random acts of kindness.

These acts can be simple yet meaningful ways to make a difference in the day of someone. I enjoy paying for the coffee of the person behind me in the drive thru line, or buying a lottery ticket for a friend in hopes of a big win. My hospice is frequently the recipient of random acts of kindness from our community members and their thoughtfulness is so appreciated and helps other hospice patients.

I donated blood this weekend at a Red Cross Blood Drive which is something that is important to me. Every six weeks or so I do my part and donate a pint of my B positive blood, usually at the Dedham center. There are so many people that require blood transfusions each day as a way to return to a healthy state and there is always a blood shortage. This small act makes my heart happy to think that I am helping someone else. All it really costs me is a little time and a needle stick. There are blood drives in each of our communities on a routine basis and you would be most welcomed there to donate. What better way to focus on heart month.

The good news is that spring will be here soon. The vibrant colors will return to our world, the snow and ice will disappear and we will all feel better to have survived yet another New England winter.

When you go shopping this month for your Valentines and chocolates, stop over at the garden section of the store. Look for me sitting at a patio table; I will save you a seat!
