Smiles & Instinct
By
Reno Litterio

Quincy
- I try to start my day with a positive frame of mind and my instinct following behind me. This particular day the blue sky is laced with fast moving clouds that remind me of cotton candy pulled apart. I take a long look…. as I head for city hall. Volunteering to bring copies of “South Shore Senior News” for distribution, my eye caught sight of an attractive women walking towards me. I adjusted my steps to a slower pace, timing is everything, so at the point of passing me I smiled and asked her if she wanted a copy, she replied “but I’m not a senior.” “It doesn’t matter,” I said “you’re working on it every day and so am I.” We both laughed as I handed her a copy with a smile. It’s amazing what a smile can do, never doubt that.

Even with an open mind you must know when to talk and when to keep your mouth closed. There are times when holding a conversation with a certain someone I know, who never lets me finish my statement, before injecting a response and never stopping. I listen patiently for a while and then ask “when are you going to stop talking?” Anytime you converse with that kind of a person, you can bet that nothing you’ve said has registered, since they are planning the next verbal assault into a variety of subjects.

Is there a day when you are faced with making a decision and you are not sure what course of action you should take? You’re doubting, questioning and with very little time to make up your mind. We are able to fall back on our instinct. Has Man any real instincts in the sense that lower animals do? Man may have his instincts, but he also has other modes of adjustment that come into play. Instinct is a term used to categorize behavior that appears to develop largely independent of experience. Most animals perform both instinctive action and learned actions. Human beings seem to modify much of their behavior by learning.
