A Refreshing Hike To The Blues Hills Observatory
By
Reno Litterio

Taking advantage of this rather mild winter, on January 28th 2006, I decided to challenge myself and hike up to the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton.

Not taking the usual trails because of soft and soggy terrain, I looked for the beginning of the service road, which is over a mile to the top.

New studies show that getting to walk outside, breathing fresh air, and changing your usual active routines may improve your mood swings.

In my moderate walking pace I reached the top and walked around the weather station, then climbed the lookout tower. The Boston skyline and the new Granite Links club house could be seen in the distance with all the clusters of new town houses and apartments.

A group of youngsters were using the chair lift and the main slope, with man made snow. It brought back many memories of my children learning the basics of skiing and spending time on the big blue.

Hiking down was a breeze and I felt energized with a sense of accomplishment. Don’t underestimate the great gains in well being and vigor that you can give yourself.
