Perfection?  Elusive Proposition
By
Reno Litterio

Quincy — Let’s start with your face. Have you looked into a mirror, covering one side and then the other? You’ll notice that there is a difference, no matter how minute, nothing is symmetrical.

Forecasting atmospheric weather changes is never purely accurate, even with the up-to-date instrumentation.

A doctor’s diagnostic tests and his evaluation are based solely on his education, experience and interpretation.

Our planet earth in our solar system is not a perfect sphere, but is a form slightly flattened at the poles called oblate spheroid, which is caused by centrifugal force resulting from the rotation of the earth around its polar axis.

Having spent many years behind a drafting table, using a straight edge, T-square, triangle, steel edge ruler and H, HB pencils, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve acquired a certain degree of accuracy. In the late fifties and sixties, before the computer came into its full potential, everything was done manually. No matter what the project was, we always tried for a certain degree of excellence, according to a given standard, but still only as good as our talent. Was it perfect? No! Perfection is a person or thing that is the perfect embodiment of quality.

When our standards of quality are compromised, by lack of interest, unprofessional standards, greed and misuse of time, and other elements within the execution of any given project, you may be sure there is no perfection.

The Id, part of our psyche, is the source of instinctual drives and of psychic energy. It is dominated by pleasure and wishing, its impulses are combined in the development of the ego and super ego. Each of us comes to the light of day with imperfections. No one is perfect.

“Perfection is man’s ultimate illusion, it simply doesn’t exist. If you are a perfectionist, you are guaranteed to be a loser in whatever you do.”

David Burns, M.D.
