Early, Early Morning
By
Reno Litterio

Early…early…morning and the vast expanse of the horizon lies before me. I observe this, from my beach chair, set back from the water about one hundred yards, as the tide recedes with each lap of the wave.

The air smells clean and fresh, I breathe deeply many times over. The ocean is reflecting a dismal gray from an overcast sky. Now and then the sun breaks through, sending its light to reflect, like sparkling jewels, on a small patch of ocean to my right.

A web-footed sea gull walks about on the wet sand, looking for small morsels to feed on and soon takes flight, skimming over the water. Sharp jagged pieces of broken shells lie about and small smooth sand pebbles, which have been washed by the tides year after year. A commercial flight overhead breaks the silence and within minutes fades in the clouds.

Coming on to the beach, a group of twenty five lifeguards, each carrying a life buoy, which is tethered to their ankle, begin their morning work out, keeping a close formation, the group in unison jog about twenty five yards and return. Next, they dive in the ocean for an invigorating cool swim and keeping a tight unit, jog back to their assigned post.

The warmth of the sun can now be felt with each cloud dispersing into a blue sky. More humankind begin to appear and soon invade my space and view. That serene quiet time is slowly fading, as happy youngsters run toward the water. I have enjoyed my two hours, after a long walk, I leave the beach refreshed. Try it, but make it early.
